Systems possibly emulateable on Gamebunio?

Postby Quirby64 » Sun Dec 14, 2014 10:00 pm

After I saw the Chip-8 emulator thread here, I wondered what other systems might be able to be emulated on GB. :?:
I thought of two that fit the specs :

-Microvision (LCD, 16x16 )

-RCA Studio II (B/W, 80x30 or close to)

Not much, yes, but eh, it could supply some new games to the list. 8-)

If you know anything that could work, post please

Probably a stretch, but Atari 2600?
or maybe Game Gear, i dunno.
Would have to strip them of color  .

40x36

I checked it out, and an Atari would have to be downsized by 3 (only 64 x 80). Oi.

A Game Gear'd actually have to be downsized even MORE. Because of the screen being square it'd have to be 4 TIMES as small.
Because that's what we want. .o.

But back to the 2600, I wouldn't mind playing games in a small form like that. :D

It would be possible to port some Atari 2600 games to the Gamebuino, but an Emulator - no way. The Atari 2600 Hardware is very dedicated.

the GG has a much more powerful processor then the GB, so nope.

Generally, the system doing the emulation must be significantly more powerful then the system it's emulating. Not.... Not a whole lot fits that bill. Chip-8 might. maybe a z80?

I did some Specs comparisons with the Gamebuino, Microvision, & RCA Studio II. (Wikipedia, I give you many thanks! )

Gamebuino (Taken From Site for Reference) :
CPU : atmega328 @ 16Mhz (like an Arduino Uno)
Display : 84*48px monochrome (like the good old nokia 3310) + auto backlight
Sound : magnetic speaker, 4 channels
Input : Arrows + A B C buttons
Communication : 1x micro USB, 1x micro SD card, 2x I2C

Microvision :
CPU : Intel 8021/ TI TMS1100 @ 100 kHz
Display : 16*16 LCD Dot Matrix
Sound : Piezo Beeper
Input : 12 Buttons, a paddle
Communication : None

RCA Studio II :
CPU : RCA 1802 @ 1.78 MHz
Display : 64*32 B/W Monochrome
Sound : I Don't know D:
Input : 2 0-9 No. Pads on-system
Communication : None

As you can see, the Gamebuino outweighs both by a ton. ;) Emulating them could be possible, most likely. :)

Possible, though it doesn't say how much ram these two systems came with. The GB only has a 1kb.

Microvision is certainly doable, it only has 16 bytes (yes, bytes) of RAM and 2K of ROM which could be implemented in Gamebuino's EEPROM.

Seriously though, why bother? The games are complete crap (try them here) and they just wouldn't be the same without the paddle and overlays. A Microvision emulator wouldn't be too difficult but to be honest the amount of time it would take to develop would probably be better spent making some really good original games for Gamebuino.
