The width of your picture should be a multiple of 8. The toolkit is still in pre-alpha version, sorry about the not-so-explicit error messages.
Edit: the toolkit accepts any picture, it doesn't have to be black and white or bmp. On the right side of the preview there is a slider to adjust the threshold.
