Help on Senior Project

I'm a high school senior in the last year of a four year engineering course. My instructor likes to use the last year to have his seniors break off and make their own project. I found gamebuino and decided that it would be a perfect project for me. I've ordered to gamebuino units and am ready to jump in to the world of game development.
If anyone can help me ge. t started that would be appreciated. My main concerns are learning how to program from knowing basically nothing about programming. Once I've learned I'd like to know what could be a cool, but realistic, area or genre to think about once I get started on my game
