I've been using The Gimp for the past 15 years or so. It's the perfect pixel art tool, with great layers support.

Pixel art is nice in the fact that you can make good art with just about any rasterizing art program like MS Paint. Gimp is popular, as is some of the more advanced stuff like Krita (which I use, but it's wayyyy to much overkill for a gamebuino-sized screen. 'box art' though, works fine!)
Edit: I'm typing tired, I can tell. :\

If you have an ipad, Sprite Something is a lovely little app for drawing out sprites (small fee, but well worth it), has a great number of export and animation options:
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/sprite-something/id372515745?mt=8If your on a mac, I've been using Pixelmator (again a small fee for the value you get), it's a "poor mans" Photoshop if you like, however with a few tweaks is a great pixel tool...
File New Document (16 x 16 or whatever)
Press 'P' for pixel tool
View - Show Grid
Zoom In
Change head to 1 pixel
Start Drawing
Oh and 'e' to erase your mistakes

i use
photoshop but thats just since i use it in my classes
I have one question about photoshop. How do I create a grey gradient with only one shade of grey rather than the full spectrum. Also do you have the same problem of not always being able to focus on one specific pixel and sometimes coloring and erasing many? Thank you for your support to the community

Very very rough sketch. The tile set was sketched in a few minutes, lots of room for improvement. Just testing feasibility, and it looks promising. I'll let you guys guess what game it's supposed to be. ;)

A refined version:
The tile set will be 8x5, the hero has been shrunk to 8x10. The upper right bar is HP, the dotted bar is subweapon capacity.
The 8x5 tile set will allow for more interesting level design without wasting too much memory. I tried 8x4 and there wasn't enough pixels vertically, 8x6 was also nice, but I wanted the hero as small as possible, since it's looking decent at 10px high, I went for 8x5.
