I suggest Quakenet irc: Free, you can register channels & names, you can connect to it via an IRC Client (available for PC, Mac, Android, phones,
Super Gameboy, so it's no problem to let the Chat run in the background all the time
Some multi-messangers such already support IRC.
For those who do not want to install an IRC client, there's the web interface easily added to the site...
