same for me. Instinctively where A and O are located is where I'm use to mashing for accept. B and X are where I'm use to mashing for cancel.

im not from that era but dint dint they go from 1 button (not including setting switches) to like 19 buttons

apart from the a ton of pong consoles
apart from magnavox odyssey and atari u got fairchilds channel F (had to google that one) weird stick controler

I guess for the reason that ´more is better and sells even more´ buttons just popped up from everywhere. I have no trouble with them if they are possible to be pressed together fast.
Personally I prefer the likes of stick+4buttons as you get on a Neo Geo, but the pad design with 4 buttons is not bad either considering my orango tango thump can press them all together in one go. :D
