Problem with .hex files

Postby stefanvermunt » Tue Jul 29, 2014 11:34 pm

Hi,

I just received my gamebuino yesterday and i'm very happy with it!
I like the "demo" games on the sd-card..
But after a while i wanted to start on a own game..
but then the problems started coming..

I can successfully upload my own code to my gamebuino via USB but when i copy the generated .hex file to the sd-card
my gamebuino crashes on loading the game.. and the only way to make it working again is to flash the loader.hex

I am renaming the file.cpp.hex to TEST.HEX for example.. but it's not working for me..
But as i said.. when i flash the code true usb.. everything works.

HELP!!!!
I hope someone can help me..

Stefan

P.s It's the same thing with the examples..
When i upload them true usb.. no problem.
When i copy the generaterd hex file.. dead gamebuino.. :(

In the relevant folder inside "Arduino_build" (or wherever your arduino programs are compiled) there should be a <projectname>.hex file - it shouldnt be the <projectname>.cpp.hex one.

Hi Matrix828,

Thanks for your reaction..
i only have a <projectname>.cpp.hex file and no <projectname>.hex
But the wiki http://gamebuino.com/wiki/index.php?title=Getting_started#Get_the_.HEX_file_from_your_game
say's that right..

I use the .cpp.hex files as well and it works for me. Have you tried formating the SD card and putting the hexfiles on again?

hi Stefan

The Gamebuino library has changed a bit. I was also having weird problems with examples & my own programs, until I realized that the installation of the Gamebuino libs I was using was a bit older than the current released version. For example sound handling has changed. This was resulting in "dead" programs that do nothing.

Install newest version of Gamebuino libs in your Arduino environment to make sure you're not having the same problem.

You can also test were the problem is by compiling and copying Myndale's 3D demo program to your SD card. It doesn't use the GB library, so if it works, you know the problem is with old GB libs.

Hi jonnection,

Thanks for your help!
I have downloaded the gamebuino library yesterday..
So i didn't think that was the problem.
But i tried your suggestion anyway..
I compiled the 3d demo and copy'd it to the sd-card.
And... it worked.... once... :P

So now i started testing with my brothers gamebuino..
and it seems like my sdcard is the problem..
Sometimes the game loads.. and sometimes not..
And with my brothers sd-card.. no problems at all..

After some more testing it seems like the problem is still on my sd-card
only the last copied game dousn't work...
So when i want to add a new game i add another one with another name and it works..

Hi Everyone,

I'm sure that if found the problem now.
As i said, it has something to do with my sd-card.
When i copy a new game to the sd-card, it doesn't work.
But when i copy 1 or 2 "fake" or dummy games after that, it works.
So it's got something to do with the last copy'd byes on the sd-card or something.
Very strange..

I also tryed a different sd-card and pc, but that's not the problem..

So.. my questions are:
- Is there anyone who has this problem or knows how to fix it.
- What is the maximum capacity sd-card the gamebuino can handle?

Thanks :D

I've never seen this problem before. If you have a programmer, I think you can give a try at re-flashing the bootloader.
The maximum SD card size is 2GB because the bootloader only supports FAT (aka FAT16).

Hi Rodot,

Thanks for your reaction :)
And thanks for the gamebuino :D

I could try flashing the loader with my arduino (if that's possible)
but i personally don't think if would fix the problem, as it looks like a sd specific problem.

I think i'm just going to buy a new 2gb sd-card..
because i can't find the 128 mb ones anymore :)

Greetings Stefan
