Improving spam problems

Postby Xadiant » Fri Mar 21, 2014 9:47 pm

I have seen spam ruin quite a few communities that I have been a part of, so I understand the caution being used on the forum here. To make your moderation work load easier and maintain the quality of the posts I think you can allow posts to be made without the individual posts being approved after a user has had a certain number of approved posts.

This would prevent spam bots from entering as humans will be verifying the first posts and when a user is deemed "trustworthy" and help to increase the speed of conversation here.

Thanks!

There are some very smart programmers out there. Some of the bots out there will trick a human from time to time.

Here is a read up of one of the more notorious bots used:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XRumer

From my reading I have gathered that PHPbb is pretty weak against these attacks as it uses security holes in the software to get in rather than filling out the question-airs and the like. I have seen the most success in forums that run on IPBoard software.... but that may be due to it being one of the less popular choices out there for forum software.

Hello there!
I changed a few things...
- Captcha changed to reCaptcha (more efficient)
- Email verification enabled
- Approval requested only for the first post
I hope it will make the forum a better place :)
