BigBlackBox is now available!

STUDIOCRAFTapps Mon Dec 05, 2016 1:06 am
BigBlackBox

Type: Puzzle, Platformer, WallJump, UnlockableLevels.

Note: The game should be done before December 18th.

About the game:
- What's included?
A cool 8-bit platformer and puzzle game with great pixel art style. With only two colors and a four channel speaker, we can do a lot. The game

- Bounce, Slide, Jump, Kick, Repeat.
BigBlackBox has cool new physics, no more linear actions. The collision system is unique, the player has 32bit of freedom wich give a hi- precision player position.

- Not done yet!
When the game will be release, BigBlackBox won't stop his development. With time and passion, there'll be some update to make the game better. I'm probably going to create an algorithm that analyzes the size and the content of all level if you've finished the 13 levels, the game will challenge you to finish the entire level with a time limit determined by the algorithm. Also, maybe, one day, BigBlackBox2 will be available.

Story:
An evil scientist decides to develop a recipe that transforms the happy citizen of UnderCity into evil white minions, you are the only survivor. There's a cure, on the other side of the city.

It doesn't work. How do we make gif from gameplay.
rodot Tue Dec 06, 2016 9:10 am Re: BigBlackBox
You can record GIFs using Myndale's Simbuino (see Emulators). Then when you post (or edit you post), click on "upload attachment", select you file and then "insert inline".

I'm on a Mac... :(
wuuff Thu Dec 08, 2016 3:49 am Re: BigBlackBox
For the gif for Armageddon, I made one the hard way because I didn't want to install .NET. I used the HTML5 emulator to play the game, and recorded the browser window with OBS. I cropped the video with avidemux, and then split it into 835 png images with ffmpeg. I then imported all the frames into GIMP and exported them as an animated gif. I think I didn't get the framerate exactly right, so the gif speed is a little off. Obviously this is a lot of work and a bit silly, but there is a way to make one if you can find the right applications. All of the programs I mentioned can run on OS X.

Slow? You're not to first to say to the game is slow but want kind of slow? The movement? The fps? The movements look ok to me, I let my play my game to about 7 people and almost everybody say that it was hard to understand but fluid to play. If it's the fps... My Gamebuino run it ok and the emulator too. I can speed up the player but it will scrap my level design, every level has been tested and verified to be fair... But I'm happy that it work, i've started the developpement of the game around Halloween and i'm so happy that my project is going to be done.

And for the gif... I'll receive a Hard disk, it will allow me to run Windows on Mac because 128Go is not that much to run both...

Also, what is Console Block? It's a vvvvveeeeeerrrrryyyy Unity3d computer game, basically, it's a not-align blocky style game (a bit like Minecraft but the blocks are not aligned correctly with each other):

Console Block is a "Sandbox" type game where you need to use programming and construction to advance your world, for example, to make a vehicle, build wheel, engine, tie a steering wheel and a seat. For your vehicle to work, why not add a batteries that stores solar energy? To be able to control all this, you need a console, program it so that it receives information from the steering wheel to be able to control the four engines that advance your vehicle. From pumps to the joystick to loudspeakers and mechanical arms there is everything you need! All that remains is to survive the rain of meteorite or the wild animals ... What will be your next adventure?

If you want to see some gameplay part: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9YPqCDYT5z1gMu9LyxO7iw(This game just have 1 years of development and these video are very old, a lot of progress have been made since the beggining of the developpement).

I'm thinking about the gif... Can someone try to make a gif of the first level of my game please?
rodot Fri Dec 09, 2016 7:37 am Re: BigBlackBox
Here you go ! Good game :)

I agree that both the FPS is slow on the emulator (the GIF runs at full speed though), and the gameplay is slow (because I'm used to super meat boy so it's fine haha).
I think you have a 1 pixel offset on the X axis : sometimes I'm visually touching the wall but can't wall-jump, and sometimes I'm 1 pixel away from the wall and can still wall-jump.

Keep it up !

Yes it's just the player. Not a big deal anyway. Still one one of my fave gb games so far :)

Looks cool! Will it run on Windows XP?
STUDIOCRAFTapps Fri Dec 09, 2016 12:54 pm Re: BigBlackBox
I'm developping the game for mac and i use my Macbook Air for testing ... If the game is not fluid on the Macbook Air (Worst apple computer for gaming but i still run 50fps on LoL), it will surelly not be playable on Windows XP... ;)

Do you want to know why you can wall-jump when there's 1 pixel offset? That's simple. The player have a visually changing body size, when the player goes up, the body is "squash" but the collider stay to 8 by 8. If the body is the same as the collider, there's a lot of physic glitch going on.

wuuff Mon Dec 19, 2016 8:51 pm
The game is fun and has a really interesting and nice aesthetic. The levels feel a little strange, like the pieces that are put together are placed sort of haphazardly, but I think that's an interesting design decision and not a problem. I find the small bounce that the player does when falling from a high height a bit annoying because it prevents quick jumps after landing (and results some frustrating deaths), but it provides a challenge and I think that's another justifiable design decision.

The game is pretty hard, but since it isn't super long, that might be fine. I haven't made it past the fourth level, though. It's very frustrating to play because it requires a lot of precision and sometimes movement feels a little finicky. The game is really cool, and I think people willing to put the time in to master the levels will have a lot of fun. I'm sure I'll keep retrying the levels until I can beat them. However, it maybe feels a little more unfair than it needs to.

If I go off the top of the level in level 3, it shows the game's ending cutscene, which seems like a weird bug.

The levels seem strage, it's normal because the city is a big mess... :|

Ha ha ha! :lol: I put this game mechanic because the physic engine allow the player to pass into the ground and the player got stuck sometimes when it fall. I fix this bug by pushing the player upward, and when the velocity go up, it propels the player aup nd the gravity affect the player and the velocity go down... It's hard to understand (and i'm not very good to explain things in English) but this mechanic fix a glitch.

I became better and better before creating the first level, while i was working on This is why the difficulty curve is very weird and that the last level we need to perform trick such as "retrieve wall jump"(Wall jump and stop pressing the arrows for climbing walls) and "extreme wall prupulsion"(Swipe very fast on the other side for max propulsion after wall jumping). It seem unfair but the hole game is possible

Oups... 'forgot to fix this bug. When you go out of the level, the game don't know what collider (for exemple key, full block, trampoline...) to use. That's why the game shows the game eding cutscene: the game randomly choose to use the final curing potion's collider...

Important message to the author of this game:

You have a bad programming habit that is going to get you into alot of trouble.

Code: Select all
for(int yd; yd < 8; yd++) { //yd = Y Down
          ColY[yd] = PixelInCollider((-(floor((PPosX - 3 + yd) / 8.0))) , (-(floor((PPosY - 4 + 0) / 8.0))) , -(-(PPosX - 3/*e3*/ + yd) - (-(floor((PPosX - 3/*e3*/ + yd) / 8.0)))*8) , -(-(PPosY - 4/*e4*/ + 0) - (-(floor((PPosY - 4/*e4*/ + 0) / 8.0)))*8));
        }

You are declaring local variables (int yd; yd < 8; yd++) <-- in this case yd and then using them without giving them an initial value.

The proper way is --> for(int yd=0; yd < 8; yd++)

This is because in some C/C++ compilers, the value of yd is indetermined. You are assuming it is zero, and probably in Arduino it is, but in all other C compilers the initial value of yd can be anything. And your code will break. I discovered this playing BBB on the Pokitto.

EDIT: the reason why I call it a "bad programming habit" is because the compiler will not complain, but your code will not work properly. It is the worst kind of bug to have in a program. And you have indetermined local variable all over your code. Be aware that what happens with such variables is completely random on some C/C++compilers.

Here's a link that explains it:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1597 ... ve-a-value

Otherwise a really nice game! like the style very much.

Oops! I did not even notice. I'm a C# developer with unity and the compiler used in this software aware me.

I took a small break from Gamebuino to go to work on my other game but I'm sure I'll come back quickly because I find the Gamebuino community is too inactive. We should attract more people to come and enrich this community.

I just tried this game and it is quite fun!

However, I found it a bit slow so i pushed the framerate from 20FPS to 30FPS and it is even more enjoyable now IMO ^.^

EDIT: bug report!

In the third level, the one where the keys are introduced, you can finish the level in a shortcut: On the rightmost key you jump up the shaft, stand (outside of the screen) on that right pillar thing and then jump in an up/right-ish direction and then it'll say you passed the level and it'll unlock the next level

EDIT2: Stuff like this probably isn't supposed to happen, either.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRJ2vbAwSfk it is helpful, though! :3
